Shaun Gilbert

“When I let go of what I am I become what I might be”

I was born in Norfolk and love my home County. It’s a place full of beauty from the Broads and their misty marshes to the North Norfolk beaches and their big skies. I draw inspiration from my surroundings and love to breathe new life into what others may only perceive as a log or tree stump. To give a tree a second life by creating something people can enjoy for many years is a privilege.

I carve a wide variety of animals and items to suit most tastes and budgets with both chainsaw and chisel and create bespoke on-site commissions. I exhibit at various shows usually within East Anglia and am available for public carving demonstrations and events. I hold public liability insurance, am First Aid trained, hold an enhanced DBS certificate and am happy to work with you and your specific requirements wherever possible.

I can be found working from a few locations in and around Norfolk but the best way to track me down is via email. Feel free to call if you want to speak in person and please do leave a message if I’m unable to answer. I’m not being rude – it’s just difficult to hear a phone over a chainsaw and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

"I would just like to say I am pleased with the chainsaw carving of the owl I have. You have a fantastic eye for detail and we have given him two more coats of oil and he still looks good. He has no splits he's brilliant. Keep up the good work. #poshfirewood."

The hare is a beautiful piece of work and finished to a very high standard with so much detail which shows your great skills and high quality work. A very genuine man and a pleasure to do business with. Thank you so much."

"I knew nothing about Shaun’s work until a friend bought one of his sprinting hares about a year ago. I checked out his Facebook page and started to follow him, impressed at pieces such as the curled-up fox and deer kids. As a country writer, author and wildlife photographer in my spare time I love Shaun’s work and contacted him one evening to ask if I could commission a little owl. Athene noctua has always been my favourite bird. Shaun agreed and showed me an example of a previously started piece. We agreed a price and Shaun started work. Within two weeks, he sent over photos of the bird after its first oiling. My wife and I were delighted with the detail and realism. We picked it up a week later and Shaun explained it was carved from a piece of western red cedar from Felbrigg Hall, North Norfolk. Athene now has pride of place on our garden deck. A brilliant job."

Ian Barnett
"I found Shaun to be very accommodating and professional; it was a pleasure to work with him at the Borough Council’s Spring Plant and Craft Fair. He quickly established a rapport with the public, eager to witness his fascinating live demonstrations and excellent carvings. Shaun added an extra dimension to the event which was much enjoyed by all who visited."
